Passer Angelfish (Holacanthus passer)

The Passer Angelfish, commonly known as the King Angelfish, exhibits a predominantly dark blue adult coloration with a distinctive white vertical stripe extending from the dorsal fin two-thirds of the way to the pelvic fin. Yellow rims adorn the dorsal fin, while the caudal and pectoral fins display vibrant yellow hues. In females, the ventral fins are yellow, while in males, they are white. Juveniles boast an orange base color with a single white and multiple blue stripes.

Given its potential size of over a foot, the Passer Angelfish necessitates a spacious 250-gallon aquarium. While hardy, it can display aggression, making it suitable for tanks with other semi-aggressive tankmates. This angelfish grazes on live rock and may nip at stony and soft corals as well as clam mantles, making it unsuitable for reef aquariums.

A well-rounded diet for the Passer Angelfish includes Spirulina, marine algae, meaty items, and high-quality angelfish preparations containing sponges. Feeding at least three times daily is recommended.

Size classifications include Juvenile (Small: 1″ to 1-3/4″), Juvenile to Young Adult (Small-Medium: 1-3/4″ to 2-1/4″), Sub-Adult (Medium: 2-1/4″ to 3-1/4″), Adult (Medium/Large: 3-1/4″ to 4″), Large (4″ to 5″), XLarge (5″ to 6″), and XXLarge (6″ or larger).
