Marcella Butterflyfish (Prognathodes marcellae)

The Marcella Butterflyfish (Prognathodes marcellae), also known as the Diamond Butterflyfish or French Butterflyfish, is one of the smaller and rarer butterflyfish species. Its unique shape, striking coloration, and prominent dorsal spine make it a standout addition to any marine aquarium. This fish features a yellow body with a translucent caudal fin and vivid yellow fins, along with two vertical black bars, one of which runs through its eyes.

It is best suited for a Fish Only With Live Rock (FOWLR) aquarium, as it may nibble on invertebrates and coral polyps. The Marcella Butterflyfish can be kept singly or in pairs but should not be housed with other species from the Prognathodes genus or similarly looking fish. This species enjoys ample swimming space.

Belonging to the Chaetodontidae family, the Marcella Butterflyfish is an omnivore. Its mouth and hair-like teeth allow it to access small spaces to feed on Aiptaisia and other tiny foods. In addition to algae, it will accept most frozen meaty preparations and other algae-based foods.
