Pearlscale Butterflyfish (Chaetodon xanthurus)

The Pearlscale Butterflyfish exemplifies the enduring popularity of marine Butterflyfish among aquarium enthusiasts. Its stunning appearance captivates with vibrant colors and distinctive patterns, adding a mesmerizing allure to any Fish Only With Live Rock (FOWLR) setup.

True to its name, the Pearlscale Butterflyfish boasts a pearly white body that shimmers with an iridescent glow under optimal aquarium lighting. This luminous backdrop is adorned with a striking reticulated pattern in contrasting black, complemented by bold orange accents along the dorsal, anal fins, and parts of the caudal fin. Delicate touches of yellow grace the tips of the dorsal fin, enhancing its elegance.

Belonging to the “xanthurus complex,” which includes similar-looking species like the Mertensii Butterflyfish, the Pearlscale is distinguished by a distinctive white-rimmed, dark oval spot just behind its eye band. Its true reticulated pattern, resembling a net-like or crosshatch design, sets it apart from others in the complex, which typically display chevron or V-shaped patterns.

For optimal care, house the Pearlscale Butterflyfish in a spacious 70-gallon or larger aquarium with peaceful tankmates, ideally introduced simultaneously. Like other Butterflyfish, it may need extra care during initial acclimation. Notably, Pearlscale Butterflyfish are not reef safe. Their diet should consist of various meaty foods such as frozen, freeze-dried, fresh, or flake options, supplemented with vegetables and vitamins for optimal health.
