Electric Blue Damselfish
Electric Blue Damselfish (Chrysiptera cyanea)
The Blue Damselfish is one of the best-selling marine fish in the United States. Its hardy nature and small size make it a favorite among beginners, while advanced aquarists appreciate its vibrant color and lively behavior. Female Blue Damselfish are entirely blue, while males, often referred to as Orangetail Blue Damselfish or Blue Devil Damselfish, have a distinctive orange tail.
Native to reefs across the Indo-Pacific, Chrysiptera cyanea is known for its territorial nature. Remarkably, the Blue Damselfish can darken to an almost black color and hide in crevices when threatened. Once the threat passes, it quickly returns to its striking electric blue hue.
Though somewhat aggressive, the Blue Damselfish is well-suited for aquariums over 30 gallons, including reef setups with invertebrates. It is a good choice for beginners but may display territorial behavior as it matures. To reduce aggression when keeping multiple Blue Damselfish, provide plenty of hiding spots to break up territories.
Feed the Blue Damselfish a varied diet of flaked and frozen foods, along with herbivore preparations.
