Green Dottyback (Pseudochromis fuscus)

The green dottyback (Pseudochromis fuscus) is a small, brightly colored fish found predominantly in coral reefs across the Indo-Pacific region. Known for its vivid green or yellow body and striking blue or black markings, it is a favorite among aquarium enthusiasts. Despite its small size, usually around 8-10 cm in length, the green dottyback is a fierce and territorial species, often showing aggression toward other fish.

In the wild, green dottybacks are opportunistic predators, feeding on small invertebrates, larvae, and even the eggs of other fish. This predatory behavior makes them effective at controlling pest species but can also pose challenges in community aquariums. Dottybacks exhibit complex behaviors, including mimicry of other species’ colors to sneak closer to prey or avoid predators.

Interestingly, green dottybacks are known for their ability to change color depending on their surroundings and social interactions, making them fascinating to study in terms of both behavior and ecology. While they are hardy and adaptable, their aggressive nature requires careful management when kept in captivity to ensure compatibility with other species.
