Red Tail Filefish (Pervagor melonocephalus)

The Redtail Filefish, with its striking orange to red body and gray to black head, is a visually stunning addition to any tank. It boasts 1-2 dorsal spines, 30-33 dorsal soft rays, and 27-30 anal soft rays, making it uniquely beautiful. This shy fish is usually non-aggressive towards other species, except for its own genus, and prefers a 30-gallon tank with ample swimming space and hiding spots.

It thrives in temperatures between 73-84°F and a pH of 8.2-8.4. The Redtail Filefish may become aggressive with other filefish and is best kept alone or in a mated pair. Its diet should include shaved shrimp, squid, scallops, mysis shrimp, and vitamin-enriched foods to maintain its vibrant color. Commonly known as the blackheaded filefish, it is not reef-safe and may pick at corals, polyps, crabs, and other invertebrates. It is ideally suited for a peaceful, fish-only community aquarium.
