Candy Cane Hogfish
Candy Cane Hogfish (Bodianus sepiacaudus)
The Pacific Redstripe Hogfish, also known as the Masudai Hogfish, Candystripe Hogfish, or Black Spot Hogfish, is renowned for its striking appearance with brilliant red coloring and white horizontal stripes. This vivid coloration and elongated body contribute to its common name. Recently, the genus Bodianus has been updated, giving this fish its proper species designation. With its calm demeanor, the Pacific Redstripe Hogfish is an excellent choice for saltwater and reef aquariums.
For optimal care, a 50-gallon or larger tank with ample hiding spots is recommended. This fish is peaceful and adapts quickly to most aquarium setups. However, if you plan to keep more than one Pacific Redstripe Hogfish, it’s crucial to introduce them simultaneously to prevent territorial disputes. Mature individuals may show interest in smaller ornamental shrimp, especially those introduced after the hogfish is well-established in the reef tank.
Feed the Pacific Redstripe Hogfish a diet rich in meaty foods, including vitamin-enriched brine shrimp or mysis shrimp, along with high-quality marine flake food.
