Blue Spotted Puffer (Canthigaster solandri)
The Blue Spotted Puffer, also known as the Blue Dot Toby or Blue Dot Sharp-nosed Puffer, commonly referred to as Sharp-nosed Puffers or Tobies. While the Blue Spotted Puffer and the Papuan Toby Puffer share many similarities, they can be distinguished by the absence of orange coloration around the mouth in the Blue Spotted Puffer. Notably, the Blue Spotted Puffer lacks pelvic fins but adeptly uses its pectoral fins to navigate its environment. A suitable habitat for this puffer is a 50-gallon or larger, fish-only aquarium. Its unique beak-like teeth, which are fused together, allow it to feed on invertebrates within a reef tank. To avoid stressing the fish, it’s best to use a container for transferring it rather than a net. The Blue Spotted Puffer’s diet should be diverse, including meaty foods such as squid, krill, clams, and hard-shelled shrimp to help manage its continually growing teeth.
