Narrowline Puffer (Arothron manilensis)

The Narrow-Lined Puffer epitomizes the distinctive charm of pufferfish. With its classic and elegant design, this puffer features a large, pillowy body primarily in milky tan, adorned with thin, concentric bands reminiscent of wood grain. Its drooping, paddle-like caudal fin is accentuated with smoky black borders, while its iridescent eyes are highlighted by caramel-gold rings. The Narrow-Lined Puffer is a standout fish, making it an appealing choice for puffer enthusiasts or anyone looking to add a touch of personality to their larger, fish-only or fish-only-with-live-rock marine aquarium.

As a member of the genus Arothron, often referred to as “Fat Puffers,” the Narrow-Lined Puffer exemplifies the typical puffer design. Despite lacking pelvic fins and having a less hydrodynamic shape, puffers are highly maneuverable and effective predators. This species, like many “Fat Puffers,” demonstrates notable “intelligence” and “personality,” and often quickly recognizes its owners.

In its natural habitat, the Narrow-Lined Puffer can be found in diverse environments such as mangrove swamps, seagrass beds, and reef flats. For optimal care, provide an established aquarium of 125 gallons or more with excellent filtration and a protein skimmer. Decorate with live rock and other materials to create a habitat with numerous nooks, crannies, caves, and overhangs, while ensuring ample open swimming space. It should be housed with similarly sized and tempered fish, and be mindful that the Narrow-Lined Puffer will consume invertebrates in the tank, using its beak-like teeth to crush its prey.

The Narrow-Lined Puffer’s diet should include a variety of meaty foods such as squid, krill, clams, and hard-shelled shrimp to help manage its continuously growing teeth.
