Blue Hippo Tang Large (Paracanthurus hepatus)

The Blue Tang, also known as the Palette Surgeonfish, Pacific Blue Tang, Hepatus Tang, or Regal Tang, is celebrated for its stunning electric blue body adorned with distinctive black markings. These black markings start at the eyes, follow the dorsal line to the tail, and curve back above the pectoral fin, creating a pattern reminiscent of a painter’s palette.

Native to reefs across the Indo-Pacific, the Blue Tang thrives in an aquarium with ample live rock for hiding, though it also enjoys plenty of swimming space. This active fish requires a large tank to accommodate its need for room to roam. While generally peaceful with most tankmates, the Blue Tang can become territorial and aggressive towards other Blue Tangs. To house multiple individuals, it’s best to introduce them simultaneously into a larger marine system.

A well-rounded diet is crucial for the Blue Tang’s health. While it will eat meaty foods along with other aquarium fish, providing plenty of marine-based seaweed and algae is essential. This helps boost the Blue Tang’s immune system, reduces aggression, and improves overall health. Offer dried seaweed on a rock or using a veggie clip, feeding at least three times a week. Products like Sea Veggies, Seaweed Salad, and Ocean Nutrition are excellent and convenient options.
