Niger Triggerfish (Odonus niger) 

The Niger Triggerfish, also known as the Redtooth Trigger, is a visually stunning addition to any home aquarium. Its coloration can vary significantly, shifting between shades of purple, blue, and blue green, often featuring a striking lighter blue highlight on its fins and long tail lobes. The lighting conditions in the aquarium can also influence its color. As adults, they develop bright red teeth and typically exhibit a dark purple body with blue-green accents around their face, making feeding time a captivating spectacle.

This species requires a spacious aquarium of at least 180 gallons, complete with rocks and caves for hiding, as they enjoy rearranging their environment. The Niger Triggerfish is also known for its vocalizations, producing a distinct “grunting” sound. It is an active fish well-suited for aggressive, fish-only displays.

To thrive, the Niger Triggerfish needs a varied diet of meaty foods, including squid, krill, clams, small fish, and hard-shelled shrimp, which help keep its continuously growing teeth in check.
