Green Bird Wrasse (Gomphosus varius)

The Bird Wrasse is particularly notable for its elongated beak, which it uses to catch long, slender prey and hold it securely while breaking it into bite-sized pieces. Females are typically brownish-black, while males display various shades of green, leading to the common names: the Green Bird Wrasse for males and the Black or Brown Bird Wrasse for females.

A suitable environment for the Bird Wrasse includes a 125-gallon or larger aquarium filled with ample live rock, providing both food sources and hiding spots. Because this species is known to jump, a secure, tight-fitting lid is essential. If introducing a pair, it’s best to add the female first.

The diet of the Bird Wrasse should consist of vitamin-enriched frozen mysis shrimp, vitamin-enriched frozen brine shrimp, and other meaty foods, along with high-quality marine flakes and pellets.
