Paddlefin (Rainbow) Wrasse (Thalassoma lucasanum)

The Paddlefin Wrasse, also known as the Rainbow or Cortez Rainbow Wrasse, exhibits striking color changes as it matures. Juveniles are primarily black with a yellow and pink belly, while adults showcase a vibrant reddish body, with blue to green hues on the head and fins. A bright yellow band behind the head adds to the adult’s appeal. This species is one of the smaller wrasses in its genus, making it a delightful addition to a saltwater fish-only aquarium.

For optimal care, the Paddlefin Wrasse should be housed in a 75-gallon or larger aquarium with larger, more aggressive tank mates and plenty of rocks for hiding. It can become territorial and may harass new additions, so it’s best introduced last into the community. A mate can be kept with it if the aquarium is at least 125 gallons. It may consume crustaceans, mantis shrimp, and bristleworms, but does not harm corals or live plants.
