Ornate Cowfish (Aracana ornata)

The Ornate Cowfish, also known as the Ornate Coralfish, is a striking addition to saltwater aquariums. This species is easily recognized by its characteristic “horns” resembling those of a bull or cow, which develop as they mature. Juveniles lack these horns, displaying a yellow-brown base color with geometric patterns. Adult males exhibit vibrant blue hues and bright orange tails with scalloped edges, while females are more subdued but retain the unique patterns and fin shapes.

In the wild, Ornate Boxfish are typically found in tropical waters around coral reefs, favoring depths between 3 to 30 meters. They thrive in areas rich in coral growth and rocky outcrops, where they can find shelter and food.

For optimal care, the Ornate Boxfish should be kept in a tank of at least 100 gallons, with plenty of live rock and a sand substrate. They thrive in environments with larger, aggressive tank mates but can become territorial, so it’s best to introduce them last. While they are reef fish, they should not be housed with cleaner fish due to their sensitive skin; stressed boxfish can secrete toxins that may harm other inhabitants.
