Whitley’s Boxfish Female (Ostracion whitleyi)

The Whitley’s Boxfish females are golden yellow with white spots and a white lateral band.

This species is challenging to keep and is best suited for experienced aquarists. Caution is advised when introducing the Whitley’s Boxfish into a reef tank, as they often nibble on tubeworms. When stressed, they release a toxin called ostracitoxin from their mucous glands, which can be lethal to other fish in the tank.

Breeding this species in captivity has proven to be very difficult. Upon introduction, feed the Whitley’s Boxfish a diet of live brine shrimp or bloodworms. After they acclimate, you can offer chopped squid, clams, mussels, and herbivore preparations for a well-rounded diet.
