Auriga Butterflyfish (Chaetodon auriga)

The Auriga Butterflyfish, also known as the Threadfin Butterflyfish, is a popular and readily available species among butterflyfish. Generally hardy, this fish inhabits both inner and outer reef slopes in the wild. Its coloration and markings can vary depending on its region; for example, specimens from the Red Sea often lack the dorsal fin’s eyespot, which serves to confuse predators.

This species is quite shy, so it’s important to provide plenty of hiding spots in its environment. However, the Auriga Butterflyfish is not reef safe and should be housed in a tank with live rock only, as it tends to graze on the rock.

For optimal health, the Auriga Butterflyfish should be fed a diet rich in meaty foods, including fish, crustaceans, mysis shrimp, and frozen marine preparations.
