Blue Linckia Starfish

The Blue Linckia Sea Star is a true standout for any dedicated reef aquarium enthusiast. Its striking blue color is a remarkable feature, making it a captivating focal point in the tank. Occasionally, the vibrant blue body may display red or purplish spots, further enhancing its beauty. This sea star is also known as the Comet Sea Star, Blue Sea Star, or Blue Starfish.

In the wild, the Blue Linckia Sea Star inhabits the sunny zones of reefs and reef fringes, where it constantly searches for food. In a home aquarium, it prefers a well-lit environment with a sandy or coral rubble substrate, along with plenty of rocky hiding spots. When juvenile, it displays a blue-green hue and tends to spend much of the day hiding in small caves or under overhangs. As it matures, its bright blue body becomes more prominent, and it can often be seen anchored to rocks or glass, waving its arms in the water while searching for small, free-floating microbes.

Though generally solitary, the Blue Linckia Sea Star gets along well with other starfish and peaceful fish in the tank. However, it is highly sensitive to sudden fluctuations in oxygen levels, salinity, and pH, and it cannot tolerate copper-based medications. To ensure its health, a slow drip acclimation method is strongly recommended to prevent stress from changes in water chemistry. Additionally, it should never be exposed to air while being handled, and careful monitoring for the parasitic snail Thyca crystallina is advised.

In the wild, the Blue Linckia Sea Star can regenerate a new starfish from almost any part of its body if it loses an arm. However, this is much less common in a home aquarium setting. To supplement its diet, small pieces of clam meat or specially designed tablets can be placed beneath the starfish.
