Asfur Angelfish (Pomacanthus asfur)

The Asfur Angelfish, also known as the Arabian Angelfish or Crescent Angelfish, hails from the Red Sea and the Indo-Pacific. With a dark blue/purple body, black face, and a prominent yellow crescent dividing its body vertically, it is often mistaken for Pomacanthus maculosus but distinguished by its bright yellow tail. Notably, the juvenile exhibits distinct color variations from the adult.

Due to its territorial behavior, the Asfur Angel is best kept individually in a spacious 150-gallon tank with ample hiding spots and live rock for grazing. While inclined to nip at stony and soft corals and clam mantles, it can coexist with small-polyped stony corals and certain noxious soft corals.

Being hermaphroditic, distinguishing between male and female Asfur Angelfish is challenging, and breeding in captivity is highly difficult.

In a confined reef setting, the Asfur benefits from a balanced diet comprising vegetables, meats, and angelfish preparations with spongiform products.
