Axilspot Hogfish
Axilspot Hogfish (Bodianus axillaris)
With its captivating colors and vibrant personality, the Axilspot Hogfish, also known as the Panda Hogfish or Polkadot Wrasse, is a standout choice for any aquarium. Juveniles are characterized by their brown to black coloration adorned with nine white spots. As they mature, these fish develop three striking false eyes and display a dramatic color transition from a fuchsia head to a bright yellow tail. A distinctive white line running down the middle of the body creates a striking contrast, making the hogfish appear half in shadow and half in light. To keep an Axilspot Hogfish, a tank of at least 70 gallons with plenty of hiding spots is recommended. This species is known for its peaceful nature and generally adapts quickly to new environments. However, if you plan to introduce more than one Axilspot Hogfish to the same tank, it is crucial to add them all at once, as they can be slightly territorial with each other.
