Banana (Sunset) Wrasse (Thalassoma lutescens)

The Banana Wrasse, also known as the Yellow-brown Wrasse, Sunset Wrasse, or Yellow Wrasse, displays distinct coloration depending on its sex. Females typically appear yellow, while males exhibit a striking blue hue. Both sexes feature green facial markings and fine vertical stripes along their bodies, with vividly patterned fins.

This species thrives in a 125-gallon or larger aquarium, preferably with other aggressive tank mates like Tangs, Puffers, small Triggerfish, and Angelfish. Active and lively, Banana Wrasses need ample rockwork for hiding and a securely fitted lid. They can become territorial, often harassing new additions, so it’s best to introduce them last in a community tank. They may coexist with a mate if the aquarium is large enough.

Banana Wrasses will prey on mantis shrimp and bristle worms, but they do not consume corals or live plants. Their diet should consist of vitamin-enriched frozen mysis shrimp, frozen brine shrimp, and other meaty foods, along with high-quality marine flakes and pellets.
