Barred Filefish (Paraluteres prionurus)

The Barred Filefish (Paraluteres prionurus) is a striking species found in the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region. Recognized for its distinct coloration, it features a pale body adorned with dark vertical bars that run along its sides. These patterns provide excellent camouflage in the wild, where the fish often mimics the more toxic and similarly patterned species, like the pufferfish, as a defense mechanism against predators.

This species is generally peaceful and makes an excellent addition to a community saltwater aquarium, especially in a fish-only setup. It prefers an environment with ample hiding places, such as live rock and coral structures. The Barred Filefish is relatively small compared to other filefish, typically reaching around 4 to 6 inches in length, making it well-suited for tanks around 50 gallons or larger.

In the wild, the Barred Filefish feeds on a diet of algae, small invertebrates, and coral polyps. In captivity, it thrives on a varied diet of marine-based foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and frozen marine algae. Feeding them multiple times a day with a balanced diet helps ensure their vibrant colors and overall health. However, they are not reef-safe as they may nip at corals and invertebrates.
