Black Bird Wrasse
Black Bird Wrasse (Gomphosus varius)
The Bird Wrasse is notable for its elongated beak, which allows it to catch and hold long, slender prey while breaking it into bite-sized pieces. Females are typically brownish-black, while males display various shades of green, earning the male the nickname “Green Bird Wrasse” and the female the “Black or Brown Bird Wrasse. “For optimal care, a 125-gallon or larger aquarium with plenty of live rock is essential, as it provides both food and hiding spots. Since Bird Wrasses are known jumpers, a tight-fitting lid is crucial. If adding a pair to the tank, it’s best to introduce the female first. Their diet should consist of vitamin-enriched frozen mysis shrimp, frozen brine shrimp, and other meaty foods, along with high-quality marine flakes and pellets.
