Black Saddle Filefish

The Mimic Saddle Puffer, or Blacksaddle Filefish, is actually a type of filefish that has evolved to closely resemble the Valentini Puffer in both body shape and coloration. This mimicry serves as a defense mechanism, deterring potential predators by making the filefish appear as an unappetizing meal.
Visually striking, the Mimic Saddle Puffer features dark brown bands across its midsection, brownish-orange spots along the lower half, yellow fins, and blue stripes running along its back. Unlike many other fish, it lacks pelvic fins but skillfully uses its pectoral fins to navigate its environment. One reliable way to distinguish the mimic filefish from the puffer it imitates is by the number of dorsal spines: the filefish has two, while the puffer has only one.
Generally peaceful, this species rarely shows aggression toward other fish, except for those within its own genus. It thrives in a well-maintained aquarium of at least 30 gallons and should not be kept with invertebrates, as it may nip or feed on them.
For optimal health, its diet should be varied and include shaved shrimp, squid, scallops, mysis shrimp, freeze-dried krill (soaked in a vitamin supplement), and frozen marine algae. Feedings should occur at least three times per day.
