Blackfin Squirrelfish (Neoniphon opercularis)
The Blackfin Squirrelfish, Mouth-fin Squirrelfish, or Clearfin Squirrelfish, is a species found in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, ranging from East Africa to New Caledonia. This fish inhabits reefs and lagoons at depths between 3 and 25 meters (9.8 to 82 feet) and can grow up to 35 centimeters (13.8 inches) in total length.Blackfin Squirrelfish are typically solitary or found in small groups. They primarily feed on crabs and shrimp. To deter or startle predators, they can raise their dorsal fin. Additionally, they possess a large venomous spine at the corner of their preopercle. While not heavily impacted by commercial fishing, they are occasionally used as bait in tuna fisheries.
