The Blue Throat Triggerfish is a popular choice for saltwater aquariums. Often referred to as the Bluethroat Trigger, Blue Chin Trigger, or Gilded Trigger, this species is known for its striking appearance and lively behavior. With a grayish-brown body accented by light blue spots, males exhibit yellow-edged fins and a distinctive blue throat or chin. Juveniles display vibrant colors, including vivid blues and yellows, which become more subdued as they mature. Native to the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific, Blue Throat Triggerfish thrive in environments rich in coral reefs and rocky substrates. To replicate this habitat, provide a tank of at least 125 gallons with plenty of live rock for hiding and swimming space.

These triggerfish can be quite interactive, often rearranging objects in their tank and sometimes emitting a grunting sound. They can be territorial and somewhat aggressive, particularly when establishing dominance, so careful selection of tankmates is essential. An omnivorous species, the Blue Throat Triggerfish requires a varied diet. They accept high-quality marine pellets, frozen foods, and live seafood. A balanced diet is crucial for their health and vibrancy. Due to their natural foraging behavior, Blue Throat Triggerfish are not considered reef safe. They may disturb corals and invertebrates, making them better suited for fish-only or fish-only-with-live-rock (FOWLR) setups.

For optimal care, provide a minimum tank size of 100 gallons. Ensure there are adequate hiding spots and swimming space, allowing the fish to establish territories. In captivity, Blue Throat Triggerfish can grow up to 10 inches (25 cm) and typically live for 10 to 15 years with proper care. While they can coexist with some species, such as Foxface Rabbitfish and larger angelfish, avoid keeping them with small invertebrates or delicate corals.
