Chalk Bass

Chalk Bass (Serranus tortugarum)

The Chalk Bass, native to the Caribbean, is one of the smaller bass species and is ideal for beginners. Its body is orange with a purple mid-section, highlighted by electric blue vertical bands. A 30-gallon aquarium with plenty of live rock for hiding is ideal for Chalk Bass. They are peaceful towards other fish and can be kept in groups if introduced simultaneously. They do not harm corals or sessile invertebrates, making them perfect for reef aquariums. However, larger specimens may prey on small shrimp, particularly those in the Periclimenes genus.
