Convict Tang (Acanthurus triostegus)

The Convict Tang, also known as the Convict Surgeonfish, features a refined color palette with an ivory-grey body accented by creamy yellow on its dorsal half. This understated backdrop highlights six prominent vertical black bars, giving the Convict Tang a distinguished minimalist look. Valued for its peaceful nature and its impressive algae-eating habits, the Convict Tang is an excellent addition to any tank, especially for managing nuisance algae.

In its natural habitat, the Convict Tang has a broad distribution across the Indo-Pacific and Eastern Pacific Oceans. It is commonly found in shallow reef environments, often forming large groups as it grazes on algae. These fish are frequently located near freshwater runoffs where algae growth is plentiful.

To provide optimal care, house the Convict Tang in a well-established, well-filtered aquarium of at least 125 gallons. Mimic its natural reef habitat with ample live rock and ensure there are open swimming areas. Enhance water movement with powerheads or wavemakers to create a dynamic environment. Although generally peaceful, Convict Tangs can exhibit territorial behavior towards their own species and other tangs, so it’s best to keep only one per tank unless introducing multiple fish simultaneously into a very large setup.

While the Convict Tang will eat meaty foods, it is crucial to provide a diet rich in marine-based seaweed and algae. This diet supports its immune system, reduces aggression, and promotes overall health. Offer dried seaweed or Nori using a veggie clip, and include Spirulina or algae pellets at least three times a week.
