Eight Banded Butterflyfish
Eight Banded Butterflyfish (Chaetodon octofasciatus)
The Eight Banded Butterflyfish (Chaetodon octofasciatus), also known as the Eight Stripe Butterflyfish, is one of the smallest butterflyfish, reaching a maximum size of 5 inches in captivity. This slender fish, with its yellow body adorned with eight black vertical stripes, is a striking addition to a saltwater aquarium. Its slim profile allows it to hide among coral branches in its natural habitat.
In an aquarium setting, the Eight Banded Butterflyfish requires ample hiding spots, such as live rock, and plenty of space to swim. Although generally peaceful, it is not reef safe as it feeds on coral polyps, crustaceans, and nibbles on Tridacna clams.
This species, a member of the Chaetodontidae family, is also one of the most challenging fish to maintain due to its corallivorous diet, making it suitable for expert-level aquarists only.
