Firefish Goby (Nemateleotris magnifica)

The Firefish, also known as the Firefish Goby, Fire Goby, or Magnificent Dartfish (Nemateleotris magnifica), is a favorite among marine hobbyists due to its stunning coloration, distinctive body shape, and charming personality. This vibrant fish features a yellow head, white front, and a pinkish to orange-red rear, with black highlights on its dorsal, anal, and caudal fins. Renowned for its gentle temperament, the Firefish Goby is an excellent choice for smaller reef tanks.

In its natural habitat, the Firefish Goby is often seen in groups hovering over reefs, feeding on planktonic food carried by the current. It is a shy fish that relies on “bolt-holes” for protection from predators. In the aquarium, it needs multiple hiding spots among rocks or outcroppings to retreat to when feeling stressed. While generally peaceful with other species, it can be territorial with its own kind unless housed as a mated pair.

To mimic its natural environment, provide the Firefish Goby with a tank of at least 20 gallons, moderate lighting, and a gentle current over live rock. It is important to have a tank cover, as the Firefish Goby is known for its tendency to jump when stressed.

The Firefish Goby’s diet should include algae, zooplankton, vitamin-enriched brine shrimp (live or frozen), mysis shrimp, and other prepared marine foods.
