Lyretail Wrasse
Lyretail Wrasse (Thalassoma lunare)
The Lyretail Wrasse, also known as the Lunare Wrasse or Moon Wrasse, showcases distinct color changes as it matures. Juveniles feature a blue lower body adorned with a black spot on the dorsal fin and a dark blotch at the base of the caudal fin. As they grow, this blotch transforms into a yellow crescent, while their body shifts to a green hue with vibrant facial and fin markings.
For optimal care, the Lyretail Wrasse should be housed in a 125-gallon or larger aquarium with aggressive tank mates and plenty of rockwork for hiding. It tends to be territorial and may harass new additions, so it’s best to introduce it as the last fish. If the aquarium is 150 gallons or larger, it can be kept with a mate. Note that it may prey on mantis shrimp and bristle worms, but it does not consume corals or live plants.
A balanced diet for the Lyretail Wrasse should consist of vitamin-enriched frozen mysis shrimp, frozen brine shrimp, other meaty foods, and high-quality marine flakes and pellets.
