Marine Betta
Marine Betta (Calloplesiops altivelis)
The Marine Betta, also known as the Comet, is a resilient and disease-resistant fish that inhabits rocky crevices at depths of up to 45 meters. Characterized by its “head down” posture and a false “eye spot” near its tail that mimics a moray eel’s head, this fish is a natural predator.
While not commonly found in reef-style aquariums, the Marine Betta is generally considered safe with corals and anemones. However, it will prey on small fish and shrimp. As a nocturnal species, it prefers dim lighting and needs hiding spots to feel secure, becoming more active during dusk.
When first added to an aquarium, it’s advisable to offer live saltwater feeder shrimp to encourage feeding. Live foods help the Marine Betta acclimate. Once settled, it can be fed meaty foods and frozen preparations 2-4 times a week.
