Mono (Monodactylus argenteus)

The Mono Argentus, commonly known as the Mono or Fingerfish, is native to the coastal and inland waters of Africa and Asia. This striking fish features a diamond-shaped body, shimmering silver coloration, and two black stripes on its front half. Its dorsal fin is highlighted with a yellow tint and black outline.

Mono Argentus can grow quite large, necessitating a minimum aquarium size of 50 gallons. Young Monos can be kept in freshwater, but as they mature, the water should be gradually transitioned to a higher salinity. A substrate of aragonite sand or gravel is ideal, and incorporating plants and rocks suited for brackish water will benefit the fish.

While Mono Argentus spawns in ocean saltwater, little is known about the specifics of their breeding habits and sexual differences. Transitioning from brackish to saltwater as they age will enhance their coloration and overall health.

In their natural habitat, Monos consume substantial amounts of vegetable matter. In captivity, they should be provided with dried seaweed, lettuce, brine shrimp, and high-quality flake food.
