Orange Face Butterflyfish (Chaetodon larvatus)

The Hooded Butterflyfish (Chaetodon larvatus) goes by several aliases, including Larvatus Butterflyfish, Masked Butterflyfish, Orange Face Butterflyfish, and the Blue Chevron Butterflyfish. This species adds a striking presence to marine aquariums with its flat, triangular shape and vibrant colors. It typically features a predominantly bluish-gray body adorned with lighter yellow rib-like markings, complemented by an orange face and large black eyes. Its caudal fin is notably black in color. Found primarily in the Red Sea, it thrives amidst coral reefs.

This peaceful fish thrives in aquariums with ample live rock for hiding and prefers a serene environment with plenty of swimming space alongside compatible tankmates. While it’s feasible to keep a male-female pair, individuals of the same sex may engage in territorial disputes.

Recommended for experienced aquarists, the Hooded Butterflyfish isn’t reef-safe due to its diet, which includes coral polyps. It may also graze on Tridacna clams, ornamental shrimp, and anemones within the marine aquarium setting.
