Orangetail Damselfish
Orangetail Damselfish (Chrysiptera cyanea)
The Orangetail Blue Damselfish, also known as the male Blue Damselfish or Blue Devil Damselfish, is a vibrant and hardy addition to saltwater aquariums. While the female of the species is entirely blue, the male is distinguished by its striking orange tail. Often referred to as the “Molly of saltwater aquariums,” the Blue Damselfish is known for its colorful appearance, resilience, and active nature. In the wild, these fish are commonly found throughout reefs, fiercely defending their small territories. They have the unique ability to darken to nearly black when threatened, only to revert to their brilliant electric blue color once the danger has passed. The Orangetail Blue Damselfish is somewhat aggressive, so it’s important to provide an environment that can accommodate multiple specimens comfortably. This species is well-suited for beginners and thrives in tanks over 30 gallons, making it an excellent companion for reef tanks and invertebrates.
