Panda (Masked) Puffer
Panda (Masked) Puffer (Arothron diadematus)
The Panda Puffer, also known as the Masked Pufferfish, is easily identifiable by its black patches around both eyes. Although it lacks pelvic fins, it skillfully uses its pectoral fins for movement in the aquarium. When threatened or startled, this puffer can inflate its body to nearly double its normal size. In its expanded state, its spines protrude outward to deter potential predators. Additionally, parts of its flesh are toxic if ingested, and it has a beak-like structure formed by fused teeth.
A 180-gallon or larger fish-only aquarium with a high-quality protein skimmer is recommended for this species. It may consume invertebrates found in a reef tank. To prevent stress and potential inflation during handling, use a container for transfers instead of a net.
The Panda Puffer requires a varied diet of meaty foods, such as squid, krill, clams, and hard-shelled shrimp, to help manage its continuously growing teeth.
