Ring Eyed Dottyback (Male) (Pseudoplesiops typus)

The Ring Eyed Dottyback, though rare in the aquarium trade, is a stunning and unique addition to a nano reef setup. This species is known for its distinct sexual dichromatism: males are primarily a vibrant pinkish-red, while females have a softer pink coloration with yellow-green gradients where the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins meet the body.

Also called the Big-Eye Dottyback or Hidden Basslet due to its elusive behavior, the Ring Eyed Dottyback typically dwells in crevices within reef faces and lagoons at depths of 20 to 30 feet. In an aquarium setting, these fish will often stay hidden within the rockwork, but once acclimated, they may occasionally dart out from cover to grab food.

Although not overly aggressive, the Ring-Eyed Dottyback may harass smaller, more passive species like nano gobies in confined spaces. It’s recommended to keep only one per tank unless the aquarium is large enough to accommodate multiple individuals. To maintain their vibrant coloration and prevent fading, it’s important to provide a varied diet, including color-enhancing foods such as vitamin-enriched brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and high-quality carnivore preparations.
