Smooth Boxfish
Smooth Boxfish (Lactophrys sp.)
The Boston Bean Boxfish, also referred to as the Smooth Boxfish, is a truly distinctive marine species that captivates aquarists with its box-shaped body. This fascinating fish can grow up to 15 inches and thrives in a spacious environment of at least 100 gallons, decorated with ample live rock and a sand substrate. However, it is best suited for experienced aquarists due to its sensitive nature.
The Boston Bean Boxfish is typically found in the tropical waters of the Western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. They prefer coral reefs and rocky environments, where they can seek shelter in crevices and caves.
While they can be a stunning addition to a reef aquarium, Boston Bean Boxfish are generally not considered reef safe. They may nip at smaller invertebrates and corals, so it’s essential to provide plenty of hiding spots to reduce stress and mitigate potential aggression towards other tank inhabitants.
These fish can reach lengths of up to 15 inches and can live for 10 years or more in captivity with proper care, making them suitable for medium to large-sized aquariums.
In captivity, Boston Bean Boxfish should be offered a varied diet that includes high-quality frozen and live foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, chopped squid, clams, and mussels. Additionally, algae-based flakes or pellets can help maintain their health and vibrant coloration.
