Two Barred Rabbitfish
Two Barred Rabbitfish (Siganus virgatus)
The Two Barred Rabbitfish, also known as the Barred Spinefoot, is typically found in pairs among the reefs of the Indo-West Pacific. This fish features an elongated body adorned with striking blue markings, complemented by a yellow back and tail. A distinctive black stripe runs from the bottom of its mouth to the top of its head, masking its eyes, with a matching stripe behind the gill plate.
To thrive, it requires a 120-gallon or larger aquarium. While it is generally peaceful, it may exhibit aggression toward other Rabbitfish. The Two Barred Rabbitfish can coexist with more aggressive species and is compatible with pairs. Its venomous dorsal spines deter potential predators, but care should be taken during handling to avoid stings. When well-fed, Rabbitfish are typically reef-safe, consuming a variety of macroalgae, including bubble algae. However, if underfed, they may nip at and consume some LPS and soft corals.
Its diet consists of fresh vegetables and algae, though it may occasionally nip at soft and hard coral polyps.
