Unicorn Tang
Unicorn Tang (Naso brevirostris)
The Blue Unicorn Tang, also known as the Spotted Unicorn fish, is a majestic species found in the Indo-Pacific Ocean. Its body color ranges from gray to brown, often featuring striped or spotted patterns. The most striking characteristic is its elongated horn, positioned in line with the eyes. This tang can grow up to 24 inches, requiring a very large aquarium with ample swimming space. Its diet primarily consists of seaweed preparations and macroalgae. While it can be aggressive toward other unicorn tangs, it generally maintains a peaceful demeanor with different species. The Blue Unicorn Tang thrives in the warm, tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific, particularly around the Hawaiian Islands. It is commonly found in lagoons, seaward reefs, and clear waters, where coral formations offer both shelter and food. Considered reef-safe, the Blue Unicorn Tang typically does not harm corals or other sessile invertebrates. However, it may graze on certain algae, making it important to provide ample marine vegetation in the tank to meet its dietary needs and protect your corals. These tangs can reach lengths of approximately 24 inches (60 cm) and can live for 15 years or more in a well-maintained aquarium.
